Look Important, It Helps You to Think Important
Perhaps you, men, ever wonder why you, the man, have to look good many times. What are the benefits of being look good?
On the books, “The Magic of Thinking Big”, David J. Schwartz gave the explanation why you need to be looking good. And I want to share his advice to you to make you more willing to be looking good. Here’s the excerption of his thought.
Your Look Speaks to Yourself!
Make sure your look speaks the positive things about you. Don’t leave home when you think you’re not in the look as the man you wanted to be.
American Institute of Men’s and Boy’s Wear made a very honest tagline: “Dress Properly. No Compromise!” The tagline deserves framed hanging on the walls of every homes, offices, bedrooms, and classrooms.
To be good looking and neat costs less. You just need to response the tagline literally. Dress properly; and that always gives you benefits. Remember: Be looking good ‘because it helps you to think important.
Wear dress as a tool to raise your spirit, build your confidence. An aged professor used to give his students advice in the last preparation of their final exam: “Dress for the important exam. Wear a new tie. Iron your suits. Polish your shoes. Be excited ‘because it’ll help you to think sharply.”
The professor knew the psychological point. Don’t get it wrong. Physical appearance affects your mind. How you look outside bring impacts to how you think and feel inside.
Some said that all the boys went through “hat phase” that they were using hat to identify themselves to be any prominent figure they adore. When a boy wears a Lone Ranger hat, he then thinks as the Lone Ranger. Soldiers feel and think as soldier when they wear the suits. Woman is more eager to go to the party if she wears the party dress. And so does an executive. He thinks more like the executive when he dresses like one. A successful salesman makes good sales when he wears good dress.
Your Look Speaks to Others!
Your look speaks to you and other people. Your look determines what people think about you. In theory, it does sound good to have people judge your intellectuality instead of your dress. But, don’t get me wrong, people do judge the book by its cover. And what you wear is the first thing they perceived from you. First impression determines your score.
In supermarket, people sell wines with good baskets much more than ones inside ordinary containers. Better packaging creates better sales and better price.
The point is: the better you were packaged, the more you get the public acceptance. People see you and make a quick judgment, which is sometimes intentionally, and treat you as their judgment.
Yes, indeed, your look does speak. Men who look good speak the positive things. His look tells people: “Hey, this is the man who is a big shot: clever, successful, and reliable. He respects himself and I respect him.”
Men who look messy speak the negative things. His look tells people: “Hey, this is a man who is sloppy, inefficient, and unimportant. He’s just an ordinary people. Treat him no special. People used to play around with him.”
How to Look Good and Be Important?
Now I bet you agree with me yet we that we need to be looking good. Next question is, how to choose clothes which makes me feel right and people respect me?
David J. Schwartz gives the tips: “Pay twice much, buy half.”
Keep it in mind the tips and apply it. Apply it to clothes, hats, jackets, shoes, and each thing you wear. When it comes to appearance, quality is over the quantity. When you apply this rule, you give respect to yourself and others.
Apparently, you save your money when you buy twice more and buy half because:
- Your clothes last twice longer because the quality is twice better; and after a long period, it still shows its quality.
- The styles of your clothes stay up to date for a long period as well. Yes, good quality clothes always do.
- When you buy good quality clothes, you will get better advice. High class fashion stores always helping you to find proper clothes whereas ordinary stores do not.
Always keep it in mind: Your Look Speaks to Yourself and People. Make sure your look speaks: “Here is the man who respects himself. He is a prominent man. Treat him as the gentleman.”
You are what you think you are. If you look inferior, there you be inferior. Give your best look, and you will then unleash your best think and action.
(The late David Joseph Schwartz was a professor at Georgia State University, Atlanta, and was considered a leading American authority on motivation. He was also President of Creative Educational Services, a consulting firm specializing in leadership development. His book, “The Magic of Thinking Big”, is phenomenal best seller and has been translated into more than 50 different languages of the world.)
