On his latest movie which featured an array of all the single leading blockbuster action star of the 1980’s and early 1990’s, including Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as more recent stars such as Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, and Steve Austin, THE EXPENDABLES, Sylvester Stallone wore a PANERAI LUMINOR 1950 REGATTA RATTRAPANTE (and so did Jason Statham and Terry Crews).
Originally created for the international boat event, Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge – series of regattas on an international circuit in both Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, the limited edition of 500-pieces timepiece naturally features a split-second chronograph (rattrapante mechanism) which allows for the timing of two events of different duration; it’s so perfect for such competitive yacht sailing.
As a real sailor’s instruments, the new Panerai’s signature cushion shaped case – 44 mm in diameter, is coated with a black DLC (“Diamond-Like Coating”) treatment in order to significantly improve, not only the hardness of the stainless steel material, but also its corrosion-resistance. Moreover, the winding crown at the right side of the case is protected by the PANERAI security system presenting a 100-meter (10 ATM) water resistance. In order to give a clear vision when looking to the watch on a bright sunny day, the dial is protected by a 2-mm thick anti-reflective sapphire crystal.
The black dial of PANERAI LUMINOR 1950 REGATTA RATTRAPANTE WATCH is adorned with a beautiful hobnail pattern. The dial is set with tachymeter scale at the periphery; two side-by-side sub-dials; as well luminous hour markers with white text; not to mention the color of the sea: blue that performs as the accents on the five minute countdown of the 30-minute counter and the central split-second chronograph’s hand.
The Panerai Lumior 1950 RR 44 mm DLC Watch is animated by a self-winding mechanical movement – the Panerai OP XVII caliber. It’s a highly reliable movement with a balance frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour offering 42 hours of power reserve.
The two column wheels at the right side of the crown are for controlling the chronograph: start, stop and return to the zero functions; while the button at 8 o’clock is for activating the complex rattrapante. The black leather strap with a Panerai tang buckle in DLC-stainless steel rounds out the timepiece.
A complete set of Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante consists of the wristwatch, a second interchangeable strap and a small steel screwdriver.

SYLVESTER GARDENZIO STALLONE (born July 6, 1946) has already had a long connection with OFFICINE PANERAI. In fact, the Italian-American actor is partly responsible for Panerai’s popularity in Hollywood. In his notable movie “Rambo”, Stallone wears a Panerai PVD Luminor Marine Militare Watch. But most people do not aware of the brand until in 1995 when the Hollywood star was spotted buying a Panerai Luminor in a jewelry store in Rome to wear during shooting of the film “Daylight”. Later, Stallone commissioned the Italian watch making company, Officine Panerai to produce a highly limited edition (15 pieces only) of watches that got the name ‘Slytech’ inspired by his nickname – Sly; it also has his signature on the case back. Sly offered the watches as gifts to friends, including Arnold Schwarzenegger (who happens to appear on ‘The Expendables’ as a cameo). And so Panerai Watch gained rapid popularity.

“I immediately felt when I saw the watch that it had star power,” Stallone said. “Besides, it’s perfect for people who are over 45 years old,” he added in reference to the ease of reading large-format watches.

For the underwater scenes in “Daylight”, Sly Stallone ordered Officine Panerai to design a special edition watch called ‘SUBMERSIBLE’. He then also asked for another watch with a white dial named ‘DAYLIGHT’. The Florence-based watchmaker also produced for the actor a personalized version of the Mare Nostrum Watch.
