In 1992, US Olympic National Basketball Team a.k.a. The Dream Team started dominating the Olympic Games. Assembled by 12 most talented players which then 10 player would be named among 50 greatest players in NBA history, the Dream Team crushed all the opponents constantly over 2 digits score. They passed through the qualifying around with a 6-0 record. Led by the legendary Michael Jordan, the Dream Team defeated Croatia to claim the Barcelona Olympic Gold Medal with magnificent average margin of victory of 43.8 points per game and without coach Chick Daly ever using a timeout. Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, and John Stockton were in the line-up.
In Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics, the Dream Team continued their domination impressively. Featuring five original Dream Team plus two member of 50 Greatest Players list in Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O’Neal, the US National Basketball Team defeated Yugoslavia 95-69 to capture another gold medal with average margin victory of 32.3 points per game. Also on this glorious line up were Reggie Miller, Grant Hill and Gary Payton.
In Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, once again the Dream Team went undefeated and won the gold medal. But for the first time, the Dream Team lost its invincible sensation as in preliminary games the squad could only beat Lithuania 85-76, failed to win by double digits. However, a highlighted moment happened when US Team met France; Vince Carter performed “the greatest dunk of all time”, jumping over 7’2” (2.18 m) Frederic Weis on his way to the basket. It’s so amazing. On the final, The Dream Team managed to defeat France by tight score, 85-75.
In 2004, The US Basketball Team lost its touch. Some elected player decided not to take part in Athens Olympic Games. The team was revamped and included professional player of Le Brown James, Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson. However, the team was vulnerable. The team was defeated 19 points by Puerto Rico 92-73 in the very first game. Struggling hardly, the US Team could reach the semifinal though afterward was defeated by Argentina 89-81. The 2004 Olympic US Basketball Team could only claim bronze medal after beating Lithuania.
The Redeem Team! That’s what the media called for the 2008 US Olympic Basketball Team to imply the ambition to restore US dominance in international basketball. The 2008 Dream Team in Beijing Olympic Games includes Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Carlos Boozer, Deron Williams, Michael Redd, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Chris Paul, Tayshaun Prince and Carmelo Anthony.
