Germany Watchmakers apparently love to produce single-handed timepieces. The first watch above is from DEFAKTO. It actually tells time in quite simple way: within twelve hours, the hand completes a full rotation; the big indexes represent the hour markers and the smaller indexes stand for 15-minutes each. Of course, you won’t get precision of one-minute; however, 15-minutes increments are still very useful. DEFAKTO says on its website that after some practise you are able to read the exact time plus/minus two minutes. Its credo says,

“Defakto tries not to display time at the exact second. It’s puristic enables an intuitive readability for people who are not meticulous bound to the exact time.”

Produced in Watchmanufactory ICKLER in Pforzheim, Germany, DEFAKTO ONEHANDWATCH features premium stainless steel case (measuring 42 mm in diameter and 9.8 mm height) with black or white dial, sapphire crystal on the front as well as the transparent caseback displaying reliable high-precision Swiss ETA automatic movement calibre 2824-2 (with a 25 jewel set, it creates 28,000 vibrations per hour with a 38 hour power reserve). Its strap is made of black calfskin (soft veal leather), ensuring a comfortable wearing. The clasp has the DEFAKTO brand name lasered in. For the use in the dark situation, the timepiece is equipped with fluorescent chemicals to the indices and watch hand. Water resistance is 50 meters (5 ATM).

DEFAKTO NACHTSCHICHT PVD (English: Nightshift). It features stainless steel case with PVD coated as well as white dial with a fully fluorescent dial and slightly increased hand and indexes.

The next one-handed watch featured in the beginning of the article is from BOTTA-DESIGN. The German manufacturer, founded by Klaus Botta, has produced four designs of single-handed watch including one released in this 2010; they are: UNO, SOLUS, UNO 24, UNO Automatic, and BLACK EDITION. Animated by famous Swiss brands Ronda and ETA, the watches are developed and manufactured entirely in Germany. The case is made in Pforzheim while assembly takes place in a factory in the Black Forest.

These Botta-design single handed watches has water resistance of 30 meters (3 ATM), sapphire crystal protecting the dial, and 2-year warranty.

BOTTA-DESIGN SINGLE HAND WATCH – UNO

UNO is the first model which bears single hand. It’s THE ORIGINAL, created by Klaus Botta in 1985 with a credo: “Things become clearer when you reduce them to their bare essentials”. The simplified dial provides an approximate idea of the current time at a glance. The watch works this way: the only hand on the watch moves just like the hour hand of any normal (analog) watch with several hands – in other words, every 12 hour it completes one full rotation. The big indices (with Arabic numerals) tell the hour while the smaller ones indicate the minute with 5-minute gradations.

The UNO is available in two variations of dial: black or white. The UNO black dial features stainless steel case, measuring 35 mm in diameter, 5.5 mm height and weighing 30 gram. It is animated by Swiss made Ronda calibre 705. The UNO white dial features 40-mm-in diameter stainless steel case with height of 6.9 mm and 42 g in weight. Either black or white dial UNO is also available in two choices of straps: a vegetable tanned leather wristband or a stainless steel bracelet.

BOTTA DESIGN SINGLE-HANDED WATCH – SOLUS

Launched in 2007, twenty two years after the first modern single-hand watch –UNO, The second watch in line, SOLUS has been developed on the same principle of telling time. As its predecessor, Solus also allows the wearer to check the time at a glance. The strength of this display principle, however, lies without doubt in day-to-day timekeeping, as it allows the time of day to be checked quickly and easily.

The watch combines technical clarity and simplicity with maximum comfort and quality. SOLUS employs state-of-the-art technology as well as high quality parts and materials to provide maximum comfort and quality. After spending extensive technical effort, the height of the titanium case (including its eight screws) has been reduced to just 4.9 mm (diameter: 39 mm, weight: 28 g); the visible height of the watch is equivalent to that of a one euro coin! BOTTA DESIGN SINGLE HAND WATCH – UNO AUTOMATIC

The UNO Automatic is the highest evolutionary stage of the UNO one-hand watch. It also applies the same philosophy and displays time in the same way as the predecessors. Assembled by hand in traditional workshop in the Black Forest, the top-of-the-range model has been optimized in regards of the precision of the high quality Swiss-made ETA movement calibre 2824-2 before it was released for shipment.

The improvement in this series includes the angled scale ring which ensures very good readability; it minimizes the risk of telling the wrong time due to the parallax effects. Also, the way the hand is joined to the movement is also unusual – the centre of the hand is a closed cylinder that completely covers the otherwise open movement.

BOTTA DESIGN SINGLE HAND WATCH - UNO 24

As its name suggest, the UNO 24 shows the entire day at a glance. During the course of each 24-hour period, the single hand of the UNO 24 completes just one full rotation. A delicate line marks the point of transition from one day to the next. The moment the watch hand crosses this line, the date jumps forward to show the new day. In other words, the UNO 24 indicates the course of the day in analogue form. The positioning of the watch hand on the dial corresponds to the position of the sun in the sky. The precise scaling means that the time of day is shown with an accuracy of around five minutes. However, after a short period of familiarization, the wearer will be able to tell the time even more precisely.

BOTTA-DESIGN UNO 24 features stainless steel case measuring 40 mm in diameter and 6.8 mm height. It weighs 38 g. Available in black or white dial, the watch is animated by Swiss-made movement RONDA caliber 515 24H. Also, there are two choices of strap: a finest vegetable tanned leather wristband or a stainless steel.

BOTTA-DESIGN UNO 24 - BLACK EDITION

Single Handed Watch by Germany BOTTA DESIGN “Black Edition” series: UNO, UNO 24 and SOLUS

Introduced in 2010, this “Black Edition” line is actually the new product variants of four previous Botta-Design models: Uno, Solus, Uno 24 and Helios (since Helios is not a single handed watch, we don’t feature it on this article). It has same features than the basic models except for the all black appearance and its extremely hard surface made of hardened steel. The watch’s surface is much tougher and more resistant even than the high-quality stainless steel and titanium case, providing optimum protection against scratches and an extremely refined look.
