He opened the watch face to reveal its removable compass which points south (rather than north as in the western compass). It against the backdrop of a feng shui map which embodies the five fundamental elements of Fire (North), Earth (East), Metal (South East), Water (South West) and Wood (North West). “China invented the compass, and it originally was used by Feng Shui masters, so they could determine if locations were good. The Shanghai Tang watch will have a compass in it, and it is unique in that it points south. The literal translation of compass in China is “showing south.” That is because China’s great explorers were always exploring towards the sea, and in China that is to the south”, Raphael le Masne de Chermont explains.
FENG SHUI (traditional Chinese: 風水; simplified Chinese: 风水) literally means “wind-water”. It is an ancient Chinese system of aesthetic believed to use the law of both Heaven (astronomy) and Earth (geography) to improve life by receiving positive “qi”.
The goal of FENG SHUI as practiced today is to align the human built environment: a city, site, building, or object, on spots with good qi. The “perfect spot” is a location and an axis in time. It also includes the opposing forces of YIN and YANG; one creating an exertion and one receiving the exertion.
Traditional feng shui practice always requires an extremely accurate Chinese compass, or luo pan, in order to determine the directions in finding any auspicious sector in a desired location. And the compass is already there on your wrist, if you have the SHANGHAI TAN FENG SHUI MASTER WATCH. And the good luck continues for the first 88 owners, as they will get a complimentary home visit from a real Feng Shui Master.
To realize the watch collection, SHANGHAI TANG are working with their parent company RICHEMONT, the Swiss luxury goods company that was founded in 1988 by the late South African billionaire businessman, Anton Rupert. RICHEMONT advises on quality while the watch is manufactured in China.
Paired with a black leather band with vibrant orange accents, the SHANGHAI TANG’S FENG SHUI MASTER WATCH is available at HK $4,200.
