German design house, PORSCHE DESIGN has just released a new compass watch in March at Baselworld. The P’6250 COMPASS harks back the first navigational watch designed by Prof. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and released in 1978 as collaboration between Porsche Design and the Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen. Yet, to me, with the two-fold function, the gadget watch rings a bell of the Master Feng Shui Watch by Chinese international label Shanghai Tang.

The PORSCHE DESIGN P’6520 COMPASS WATCH consists of two parts. The upper part tells time by its three hands while the lower – revealed when you flip the watch face – is a removable liquid compass. Also, there are mirrors on the case back and top of the compass that click in place making it easier to read the direction. The case is made of titanium with a scratch resistant PVD coating set with black titanium bracelet. Animated by self-winding Swiss made Sellita SW300 movement, with a power reserve of 42 hours, the Porsche Design explorer’s timepiece is produced in limited edition of 911 pieces. Water-resistance is 50 meters.

new Porsche Design Compass Watch P’6520

I don’t know whether this timepiece will be very useful for recreational adventurers as GPS device has these days replaced the conventional navigational instrument as such magnetic compass.

Obama Watch: Vulcain’s Anniversary Heart in black leather strap

Known for owning Tag Heuer 1500 Professional and Jorg Gray Secret Agent’s Watch, President-elect Barack Obama will soon complement his watch collections. Upon his inauguration in January 20th, 2009 President Obama will receive a new model of Vulcain Watch: the Anniversary Heart. It’s a special edition watch to commemorate the Swiss Manufacture’s 150th Anniversary.

Since 1953, the Swiss Manufacture has presented each new US President with a watch. It’s a long tradition commencing with a Vulcain Cricket Watch for President Harry Truman. Over the last 60 years, many world leaders have been wearing Vulcain Watches.

Obama Watch: Vulcain Anniversary Heart in Gold Rose

In this President Obama watch edition, Vulcain specially designed a presidential caseback in 42 mm wide case available in steel or 18k rose gold. People still have to wait for the day to know which one is for President Obama.

The Anniversary Heart features Vulcain’s renowned mechanical alarm movements: Vulcain Crickets (due to the sound of the alarm), 157 parts V-18 as well as its 15-20 second alarm complexity. The alarm is adjusted using the top crown and the special alarm hand in the center of the dial.

The dial partially reveals parts of the moving gear trains. The beveled raised hour index markers as well as a minute scale on the edge of the dial show the time. The Louisiana crocodile leather completes the elegance of the watch worth of US $6,500 – 23,000.

The UK clothing company Kangol also gives you some tips on how to determine the size of your hat:

Use a measuring tape, measure around your head above your ears. That’s where you would wear your hat.

Use the chart above.

If your head size falls in between two sizes, choose the larger of the two sizes.

A small piece of foam behind the sweatband can make a large hat perfect and more comfortable.

Kangol is a clothing company famous for its headwear. In 1938, Jacques Spreiregen creates Kangol (the K from the Knitting, the ANG from the ANGora and the OL from woOL) in Cleator, Cumbria – UK. He involved in the production and distribution of berets to the British army in World Ward II, including famously Field Marshal General Bernard Montgomery. After the war, Kangol continued their Anglo tradition as its berets and hats were sported by 1948 English Olympic Team, Scout Association, the rich and famous Beatles, Arnold Palmer and Princess Diana.

More famous celebrities were seen sporting Kangol: Run DMC, LL Cool J, Kevin Eubanks and Samuel L. Jackson; as it has been the height of fashion.

Clarity is one of the essential things in determining the grade of a diamond and of course its price and value as well. A diamond with higher clarity grades is worth more expensive; in fact, the exceedingly rare flawless grading diamond worth the highest value. Lovely reflection is worth high value.

Clarity is one of the four C’s of diamond grading, besides carat, cut and color.

Clarity comes from the word “clear”. Clear means the affordability of a light to transmit through a thing. In this case, if a diamond can structurally transmit and scatter the light in a good way, it means it has good diamond clarity. It is then concluded diamond clarity as a structural grade of diamond’s purity. Often, diamond clarity is equalized to diamond purity.

So…, how can we grade the diamond clarity?

Diamond Clarity relates to the existence and visual appearance of Inclusion and Blemish. Inclusion is an internal characteristic of a diamond, probably having form of structural imperfections such as tiny cracks that can perform whitish or cloudy. The clarity grading is then affected by some factors pertaining to the inclusion: its Number, Size, Color, Relative Location, Orientation, and Visibility. They are observed thoroughly by the expert, called Grader, in a 10x magnification. Grader is human who mediate between buyer and seller. Their report is called “Expert Opinions” and their expertise’s called Gemologist.

Inclusion is simply defined as the imperfection inside a diamond. It could take forms of Carbon, Feather, Crystal, Pinpoint, or Clouds. Carbon means black spots inside a stone. Feather is internal cracking. Crystal denotes white spots inside a stone. Pinpoint is tiny spots which are smaller than a crystal; and Cloud is a group of pinpoint which may give the impression of a single large inclusion.

Blemish could take form of Chip, Fracture, Polishing Lines, Natural, Extra Facet, or Bearding. Chip is a little piece missing cause by wear or cutting process. Fracture is a crack on diamond’s surface. Polishing Lines is a fine lines on the surface caused during the polishing process. Bearding is a very small fracture on the diamond’s edge.

A minor blemish and inclusion do not affect its performance or structural integrity, even in some cases inclusions and blemish can be used as proof of natural origin to distinguish between natural and synthetic diamonds. It’s like a ‘fingerprint’, giving a unique identity.

Some people grade the value of a diamond by the very simple way. They merely judge it by its imperfection appearance. If it looks perfect then it worth good otherwise the contrary does. In fact, a structural grading is defined by the size of clouds inside the diamond since large clouds can influence the diamond’s capability to transmit and scatter light.

Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has defined diamond clarity grading scale comprising six grades and eleven categories. Category F is the clearest diamond and I3 is the worst clear. Here is the scale:

When it comes to formal business meeting, wearing a tie has been the so called uniform for the executives. You, the gentleman need to know how to wear it. It’s a basic skill to look stylish. And you, the lady, mastering this skill will impress your gentleman. J

Good tie’s knot has a dimple on it. Dimple is a niche below the knot. You will have a good dimple by placing your finger below the knot when you’re about to fasten it. If the dimple is at the center, it means you have a good one.

In the beginning you might not have an excellent knot, but that’s all right. Practice makes perfect.

There are four ways knotting a tie:

The Four-In-Hand Knot

Also know as Simple Knot, the four in hand is believed to be the most popular method of knotting a tie.

Some reports that this method began when Four-in-Hand Club in London wearing a fashionable neckerchiefs. The knot is slightly asymmetric and appropriate for any occasions.

The Half-Windsor-Knot

This knot constructs a neat triangular knot. The half-windsor knot is more symmetric (compare to four-in-hand-knot) and slightly broader knot. This method works well with light and medium weight fabrics.

The Windsor Knot

The Windsor knot is more symmetric and bulkier compared to other methods. It is appropriate in business and political occasions. This method works well for wide collar shirt and a thin material of tie.

This method was named after Duke of Windsor (Edward VIII) who preferred a wide knot and thick fabrics.

The Pratt/Shelby Knot

Also known as the Shelby knot and the Pratt-Shelby knot, this method produces a symmetrical knot for medium thickness tie. It suits to shorter ties as it uses less length than other method.
