Miami Heat’s superstar CHRIS BOSH revealed his fondness in IWC Portuguese Watch and Carrera Aviator Sunglasses along with other eight summer favorites on Ocean Drive Magazine. Previously, he shared his January’s favorites which included Hublot.

The IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph as worn by Chris Bosh brings all the precision of a nautical instrument in its genes and shows off a multiplicity of advanced technical features. Animated by the tough IWC-manufactured 89360-calibre movement (self-winding mechanical chronograph) with 68-hour power reserve and 6-ATM water resistant, the timepiece is undoubtedly designed for sailing sports activities. Its sporting qualities is also shown by a flyback function, an additional flange with quarter-second calibration for recording short periods of time and an analogue display for longer stop times on a sub-dial. Longer stop times (hours/minutes) can be read off like a second time on a separate analogue subdial.

The name of Portuguese Yacht Club is similar to the legendary Yacht Club Automatic of the 1960s and 1970s, one of IWC’s most successful watches ever. However, singled out from the other models of the Portuguese family, this Yacht Club Chronograph has crown protection along with luminescent hands and indices. Set with a rubber strap – best material for water sports of all kinds, and see-through sapphire-glass back case displaying the complicated movement mechanism, the IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph is available in three variants: stainless steel with a black dial (Ref. IW390204); stainless steel with silver-plated-colored dial (Ref. IW390206); and 18k-red gold with a slate-plated dial and black ardoise totalizers (Ref. IW390209).

Chris Bosh chose the red-gold one. He said,

“This watch is a cool way to sport the rose-gold trend, and it has advanced technical features I can really use. Plus, the rubber strap makes it particularly easy to wear when I’m in the water.”

Details:

Case height 14.5 mm

Diameter: 45.4 mm

Date display at 3 o’clock

Stopwatch function with hours, minutes and seconds

Hour and minute counters combined in a single totalizer at 12 o’clock

Flyback function

Small hacking seconds

Screw-in crown

Sapphire glass, convex, antireflective coating on both sides

See-through sapphire-glass back

For his sunglasses, Chris Bosh chose Carrera Aviator – easily recognized by their oblique teardrop shape and made of ultra-light weight Optyl plastic. Through the heat-hardening process, developed and patented by Carrera founder, Wilhhelm Anger, the Optyl plastic is not only 20% lighter than acetate, but also has less allergic reaction and more elastic.

Bosh said,

“I’m a big fan of these shades—a year-round must-have here in Miami, but especially for summer.”

Founded in 1956 as the sports eyewear, the brand CARRERA is very popular among celebrities like Sean Paul, Rihanna, Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga. In order to guarantee and constantly improve their quality, Carrera products are studied and developed in collaboration with athletes and benefit from the experience of SAFILO, which has been representing from the ‘70s the best in the eyewear sector all over the world.

Today CARRERA operates from Padova, Italy offering in the van products, sunglasses, eyeglasses, ski helmets and goggles.

Former Guns N’ Roses and current Velvet Revolver guitarist, SLASH is to auction his private and personal stuffs that includes stage and event worn apparels (t-shirts and jackets) and accessories (wristwatches, bracelets, pendants, rings, necklaces), guitars, décor (furniture), automotive (cars and motorcycles) as well as decorative objects and eclectic items from Slash’s travels around the world. The COLLECTIONS OF SLASH from his days in Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver and his most recent critically acclaimed solo album project are currently exhibited at JULIEN’S AUCTION through March 25th, 2011 (free to the public, 10:00a.m – 5:00 p.m. P.S.T., Monday to Saturday) while the live auction will be on March 26, 2011 session II (1:00 p.m.). A portion of the proceeds will go to the charity organization that works to empower abused, neglected and homeless adolescents to become self sufficient: Los Angeles Youth Network (LAYN) in which Slash is very active.

Exhibition and Auction Location:

Julien’s Auction, 9665 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 150, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 phone 310-836-1818, email: info@juliensauctions.com

Ranked #2 on Time Magazine’s “10 Best Electric Guitar Players of All-Time”and #21 on Gigwise’s list of the “50 Greatest Guitarists Ever“, SLASH (born Saul Hudson, July 23, 1965) is simply a guitar hero! He’s a Rock Walk of Fame inductee (awarded in January 2007); his name being placed alongside Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix. On the same year, Slash was also awarded the coveted title of “Riff Lord” during the fourth annual Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards. Well, who can forget his introduction’s D-flat based riff on “Sweet Child O’ Mine’, voted number-one riff of all time by the readers of Total Guitar magazine anyway?

Slash is one of my favorite; and I pronounce his ‘November Rain’ melody one of the greatest guitar solo ever! Not only me; Guitar World also listed the song at number 6 in “The 100 Greatest Guitar Solos”. It holds the record for the longest guitar solo in U.S Top 10 hit.

On April 2010, Slash released his debut solo album in which he collaborated with Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge, Fergie of Black Eyed Peas, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, Ian Astbury of The Cult, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother, M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold, Dave Grohl, Kid Rock, Rocco DeLuca, as well as rock legends such as Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, and Iggy Pop. The album, debuted at Billboard 200 charts at number 3 with 61,000 copies sold during the first week, also features the ‘classic’ members of Guns N’ Roses lineup minus Axl Rose.

From time to time, SLASH has fulfilled your life in many ways. And now the guitar virtuoso – most recognized by his iconic top hat and signature Paul Gibson Les Paul guitar – is auctioning his exclusive properties. Included in the auction sale are some of the iconic, Grammy-winning, rock guitarist and songwriter’s famous guitars, memorabilia, vehicles as well as personal furniture and décor from his Hollywood Hills residence.

Of course you, the die hard fans can have them. You can place bid online as Julien’s Auctions – the world’s premiere auction house specialized in selling personal items owned by celebrities such as Marylin Monroe, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Cher and Bono U2 – will broadcast live streaming video of the auction so that online viewers and collectors from around the world can watch the auction in real-time and bid live against others.

Undoubtedly one of the most famous celebrities associated to sunglasses is Paul David Hewson, KBE, most commonly known by his stage name BONO, the main vocalist of Dublin-based rock band U2. The Irish singer as well as musician is almost never seen in public without sunglasses. Some speculated that he has cross eyed like Roy Orbison, and the others guess he might have a cataract or even hen’s blindness (nyctalopia). But during a Rolling Stone interview, BONO himself explained:

“[I have] very sensitive eyes to light. If somebody takes my photograph, I will see the flash for the rest of the day. My right eye swells up. I’ve a blockage there, so that my eyes go red a lot. So it’s part vanity, it’s part privacy and part sensitivity.”

Well, people with lighter-colored eyes tend to be more sensitive to bright light, as are those taking certain medications (doxycycline, tetracycline, and furosemide). In a brown eye there is a lot of melanin in the anterior border layer. This absorbs the light and gives a brown velvety appearance. In a blue eye there is not much melanin in the anterior border layer. The light passes into the stroma where the collagen fibres scatter the light back as blue. In a green eye (or a hazel one) there is a variable level of melanin, so that some of the light is absorbed by the melanin and some is scattered by the collagen. The brown layer looks yellow as it is thinner, and so the yellow and blue mix to make green.

As for Bono of U2, he has blue eyes. And that explains why he bears Photophobia (light sensitivity), a condition where eyes are overfly sensitive to light, possibly causing pain, tearing and discomfort. And it seems that his abnormality get worse as the age gets more. We hardly found the anti-poverty campaigner Bono wearing glasses during his early career in the 1980s. Perhaps it is because his eyes were not too sensitive at that time. His use of sunglasses on public has progressed through the years. He has been sporting sunglasses in most interviews and public appearances since the late 90s.

However, Photophobia is not the only reason why Bono of U2 wearing sunglasses almost all the time. Of course he did it also for the image reasons, possible vanity and to create a star image. Sunglasses have already been his trademark fashion style. In fact, they have also become something of an enduring piece of pop culture; in one instance, when BONO was photographed giving a pair of his sunglasses to Pope John Paul II to wear at the Pope’s request.

On a Rolling Stone’s Interview in 2005, BONO VOX dubbed himself “the Imelda Marcos of sunglasses”. The former First Lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos was famous for owning 3,000 pairs of shoes when her husband Ferdinand Marcos was a President.

Bono Sunglasses: 1992 Fly Shades - brown

U2’s singer and AIDS activist, Bono was first linked to *shades* when he figured himself as THE FLY, a fictional character with large, dark wraparound blaxploitation-style shades or Mirror Ball Man with more typical, round sunglasses. Those pair of 1970s sunglasses was found by FINTAN FITZGERALD, the wardrobe assistant of U2 band, during the Achtung Baby recording sessions whereupon Bono would put them on and make everyone laugh whenever they ran into a problem or disagreement. The shades came to symbolize the “new U2″, a departure from the pious, rootsy U2 of the Joshua Tree-era. Bono described the character as, “a barfly, a self-appointed expert on the politics of love, a bullshit philosopher who occasionally hits the nail on the head but more often it’s his own finger-nail he leaves black and blue.” The character featured in the music video for the song of the same name, as well as the video of “Even Better Than The Real Thing” and “Lemon“.

Bono’s Bug Eyed Sunglasses: Fly Shades

The Bono’s persona sunglasses were called “FLY SHADES”. It refers to their convex lenses that bulge out like a bug’s eyes; they make the wearer look like a human fly. The plastic frame sunglasses have a single, smooth, semi-circular lens that covers both eyes and much of the same area of the face covered by protective goggles.

“’Shades’ is the most widely used term for sunglasses in North America. The BUG EYED SUNGLASSES a.k.a Fly Shades were so popular among jazz musicians in 1960. American musician and producers, Lenny Kravitz is one of the celebrities who boast the trend of these bug-eyed sunglasses in 1990s. ”

During the 1992-1993 Zoo TV Tour, Bono wore at least two different styles of Fly Shades. The first style of FLY SHADES is the 1992 style of brown colored and oval lens sunglasses. Bono wore them on “The Fly” Video and during the ZOO TV TOUR. The second style was the 1993 FLY SHADES in dark green color which have a bigger size and more rounded shape. They appeared on “Lemon” video and during the ZOOROPA TOUR in 1993.

Bono wearing rounded lens-Fly Shades on U2’s Zooropa Tour in 1993

During POPMART TOUR in the 1997-1998, BONO sported larger, tinted wraparound sunglasses with thick frames. By the early 2000s, his shades were frequently blue and more goggle shaped. Starting around the era of “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” in 2004, Bono commenced wearing his SIGNATURE ARMANI SUNGLASSES. These were commonly red or green tinted with no frames around the lenses (rimless). He wore these for most of every show on the VERTIGO TOUR, with the rare exceptions being songs like “Sometimes You Can’t Make it on Your Own“, “Running to Stand Still“, and “Miss Sarajevo“.

Bono’s shades seem to change every few years, perhaps whenever he found new better styles. He had ever worn shades by Romeo Gigli, D&G, Diesel, and else. Yet, BULGARI SUNGLASSES seems to be the most favorite even with the launch of his own Armani signature.
During the ELEVATION TOUR, Bono wore BVLGARI QUADRATO line, models 610 and 611 with customized ‘B’ letter on the sides of the frame.

The U2 frontman said,

“…A lot of people think that, when they see a “B” on the side, that it’s just my own megalomania. Only half the time it is…”

Well,..Apparently, the ‘B’ doesn’t stand for ‘BONO’; it’s the BULGARI!

On the other event, B-Man was spotted wearing Bvlgari 549 with blue lenses.

Bono wears Bulgari 549 blue lenses (above); Bvlgari 549 purple lenses (below)

Of the BONO’S SIGNATURE SUNGLASSES, there are two that carry out historical events. They are EMPORIO ARMANI 9285 SUNGLASSES and EMPORIO ARMANI 9592 RED SUNGLASSES. The first was appeared at at World Economic Forum meeting 2008 while the latter was worn by the Irish rock star at the Lincoln Memorial during President Barack Obama’s inaugural concert in Washington .

I have covered Kimi Raikkonen’s Tag Heuer Sunglasses a few months ago, and today the maker of exceptional eyewear since 2002 introduces their new lens technology: INTENSIVE HD SUNGLASS LENS. The new sunglasses are designed for land-based outdoor activities, from casual outdoor pleasure to professional athletic competition.

The TAG HEUER Sunglasses above is the Zenith style, but the lenses come in Club and 27° Air styles.

The TAG HEUER’S NEW TECHNOLOGY features VERMILLION-COLORED INTENSIVE HD LENSES which are the world’s first to merge photochromic darkening ability with re-engineered, gradient SILVER FLASH technology ¬creating non-mirrored lenses that become reflective as they darken. As a result, it creates high definition sunglasses that enhance dimensional detail of the landscape versus the flattening effect of polarized lenses.

In addition, TAG Heuer Eyewear’s Intensive HD lenses provide the optimal blend of contrast and light transmission from dawn to dusk. In low light, lenses are translucent and eyes are clearly visible; within two minutes of exposure to bright sun, lenses become dark, shiny and reflective. The lightweight polycarbonate lenses offer UV-A and UV-B protection.

The new INTENSIVE HD LENS TECHNOLOGY is appropriate for those times when a truer image is crucial ¬such as when riding a motorcycle or lining up a putt. This makes them ideal for many outdoor, land-based activities such as bicycling and motorcycling, golf, tennis, softball, hiking and days at the park.

At least, there are three key reasons why the Intensive HD is recommended for land-based activities:

The photochromic lenses automatically darken and lighten according to brightness levels.

The vermillion color contrasts against blue and green, providing excellent perception in low light and protection in bright sun.

The highly reflective silver flash greatly reduces the amount of light that reaches the eyes. TAG Heuer Eyewear developed a unique silver flash technology for this lens to offer improved visual acuity ¬ by allowing photochromic tint to react to UV and maintain the natural relationship of colors to each other.

TAG Heuer Eyewear executive Guillaume Pottecher explains:
“For years, water sports fans have worn polarized lenses to eliminate glare which is quite effective on water or ice but not especially adapted for other outdoor activities. TAG Heuer Eyewear’s Intensive HD lenses were purpose-designed to improve vision and eye comfort when taking part in land-based sports. We tested Intensive HD lenses with a variety of professional athletes, including top golfers, and their feedback was beyond expectation.”

Intensive HD sunglass lenses are available in a variety of TAG Heuer Eyewear styles, with price points ranging from $310 to $420 (MSRP = Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price). Available exclusively at authorized TAG Heuer authorized retailers.

Long before Robert Pattinson appeared with Ray Ban sunglasses, the late King of Pop Michael Jackson has been known for the brand as well. Over the years, he was rarely seen in public without his RAY BAN AVIATOR or WAYFARER SUNGLASSES. In fact, Ray Ban Sunglasses has been MICHAEL JACKSON’S TRADEMARK along with the Fedora Hat, single sequined white glove, tight and military-style jacket.

Michael Jackson was first recognized with the sunglasses on his “THRILLER” era, 1982 – 1985. As his second solo album shot to the top of the Billboard charts, Michael Jackson style came to fruition. He set up the aviator craze in the 80’s.

MJ wore the AVIATOR SUNGLASSES when he met President Ronald Reagan and first lady Nancy Reagan at the White House (1984) as he was personally thanked for donating the song “Beat It” for use in drunk-driving prevention television and radio public service announcements. In 1985, singing “We Are The World” together with a super group of 45 popular musicians billed as USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa), MICHAEL JACKSON came up with his TRADEMARK SUNGLASSES complete with the golden jacket. Later on, Michael constantly wore the sunglasses as part of his overall look and style.

The Video of Michael Jackson wearing Aviator Sunglasses while recording “We Are The World” in studio

One of Jackson’s most acclaimed performances with the RAY BAN SUNGLASSES came during the halftime show at Super Bowl XXVII, January 31, 1993 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. As the performances began, Jackson was catapulted onto the stage as fireworks went off behind him. As he landed on the canvass, he maintained a motionless “clenched fist, standing statue stance”, dressed in a gold and black military outfit and sunglasses; he remained completely motionless for several minutes while the crowd cheered. He then slowly removed his RAY BAN SUNGLASSES, threw them away and began to sing and dance. His routine included four songs: “Jam“, “Billie Jean“, “Black or White” and “Heal the World“. It was the first Super Bowl where the audience figures increased during the half-time show, and was viewed by 135 million Americans alone; Jackson’s Dangerous album raised 90 places up the album chart.

MICHAEL JACKSON’S CHOICE, Aviator Sunglasses are characterized by dark, often reflective lenses having an area two or three times the area of the eye socket, and metal frames with either paddles or wire temples which hook behind the ears. Contemporary models are often polarized which create a mirrored effect and offer the wearer the ultimate in eye protection from the harmful effects ultra violet and infra-red radiation when out in bright sunshine.

Also known as “Pilot shades”, AVIATOR were given their name due to their oblique teardrop shape, which matched those of the smoked-lens flying goggles which Ray-Ban was then selling to the Army and Navy. The Aviator became a well-known style of sunglasses when General Douglas MacArthur landed on the beach in the Philippines in World War II. Photographers snapped several pictures of him wearing them for newspapers, and Americans instantly fell in love with them. The Ray-Ban Aviator has been popularized in films by celebrities and become one of the most copied styles in history.

Of the three classic Aviator models of ranging sizes (small, medium/large, extra large), Michael chose the AVIATOR LARGE RB 3025. It has lens base 6: 55/58/62 mm. The flexibility of the super-light arms has an integral flex to the weight of the lenses.

On his first world concert tour as a solo artist covering Japan, Australia, United States and Europe: “BAD WORLD TOUR”, Michael Jackson introduced his other sunglasses: RAY BAN WAYFARER. He wore the sunglasses frequently during the tour from September 12, 1987 to January 27, 1989. It was the tour which then added two new entries in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest grossing tour in history and the tour with the largest attended audience. The tour was also nominated for “Tour of the Year 1988” at the inaugural International Rock Awards in April 1989.

SunglassesID.com noted that The Simply Greatest Entertainer Ever Lived also wore Ray-Ban Wayfarer Sunglasses when he made his famous surprise appearance on the Arsenio Hall talkshow, together with Eddie Murphy (1989).
The modern Ray-Ban Wayfarer has the Ray-Ban logo on the sides and written on the lens, but the ones worn by Michael Jackson do not have the text “Ray-Ban” on the side of the temples or on the lens, and instead have a similar chrome ‘diamond’ on the front as well as on the sides.

Ray-Ban Wayfarer 2140 of the 1980’s as won by Michael Jackson

The ORIGINAL WAYFARER RB 2140 has lens base 6: 50/54 mm. The scratch/impact-resistant lenses ensure 100% UV protection & superb optical clarity.

Wayfarers were designed in 1952 by optical designer Raymond Stegeman who procured dozens of patents for Bausch and Lomb, Ray-Ban’s parent company. The design was a radically new shape, “a mid-century classic to rival Eames chairs and Cadillac tail fins.” According to design critic Stephen Bayley, the “distinctive trapezoidal frame spoke a non-verbal language that hinted at unstable dangerousness, but one nicely tempered by the sturdy arms which, according to the advertising, gave the frames a ‘masculine look.’”

WAYFARERS, which took advantage of new plastic molding technology, marked the transition between a period of eyewear with thin metal frames and an era of plastic eyewear. They are sometimes cited as the best-selling design of sunglasses in history (although Ray-Ban Aviators have also been credited with this achievement) and have been called a classic of modern design and one of the most enduring fashion icons of the 20th century.

For a few years, JACKO seemed to diversify from the Aviator style, but in the end he always came back to them in the end. Up to his last days, Michael has been a fan of the AVIATOR SUNGLASSES. He sported his trademark sunglasses when announcing plans to perform 10 live concerts at the London O2 Arena in July, with the first set for July 13. At the last rehearsal for “This Is It” tour, two days before his death, Michael was also spotted wearing the Ray Ban Aviator.

Founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a well-to-do shoemaker from England, and family-run until 1945, Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers on both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-American war, and by Teddy Roosevelt and his ROUGH RIDERS. When homesteading drew adventurous New England families to the West during the mid and late 1800’s, many of the pioneers wore FRYE BOOTS for the long journey.

Today FRYE remains true to its roots with its line of heritage boots, but continues to innovate as it introduces chic new handbags, pumps, and sandals to its collection.

Since 1937, RAY-BAN can genuinely claim the title as the world’s leading sunglasses and optical eyewear brand. Its WAYFARER, available since 1953, is reported to be the best-selling sunglass design in history. The glasses were especially popular in 1980s; thanks to the movies “The Blues Brothers” and Tom Cruise’s “Risky Business” and the television show “Miami Vice”. The Wayfarer has earned the reputation of a modern day fashion legend.

For this incident, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at single Olympics, in Beijing Games clarifies:

“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

Besides marijuana, what else did the Olympics phenomenon Michael Phelps ever use?

In curiosity, I searched on Coolspotter and found the facts. In case of fashion accessories, Michael Phelps was using Skeletal Metal ReconBracelet, Prada 75GS Sunglasses and Lacoste Men’s Trucker Cap.

SKELETAL METAL ReconBracelet

ReconBracelet by Skeletal Metal is constructed from a stainless steel reconstruction plate used in orthopedic surgery to fix broken bones. The official website sell it US $129.00

“The plate is bent to the contour of the bone and then secured using surgical screws. This size plate is most commonly used in the larger bones of the arms and legs.”
