Speaking of which, what is VUVUZELA? Sometimes called a “lepatata”, Vuvuzela is a blowing horn, approximately one metre in length, commonly blown by fans at football matches in SOUTH AFRICA. It’s an idiosyncrasy of nationality which has become apparent at football matches as the samba drums in Brazil, the ringing of cow bells in Switzerland, or the Mexican wave.

It requires some lip and lung strength to blow and emit a loud monotone like a foghorn or an elephant. Originally made from a kudu horn, VUVUZELA was used to summon people in gatherings in the ancient days. Over the last 15 years, the sight and sound of the instrument being blown at games has evolved into an emblem of hope and unity for many South Africans.

Undoubtedly KURT HUMMEL is the trendsetter in Glee Club. CHRIS COLFER describes his character as the “fashionable soprano” of the GLEE CLUB. He’s very much into fashion and very much into himself. He puts on a very confident, “I’m better than you” persona. He’s a tough guy in designer clothes.

As for the scarf, Glee’s costume designer, Lou Eyric –winner of the Costume Designers Guild Award - has picked two designs: the Alexander McQueen Skull Scarf and Turtleneck Scarf by Michael Kors.

The Alexander McQueen Skull Scarf was worn by Kurt Hummel in episode Episode 118 “Laryngitis”. He wore the blue/ivory one. The SKULL SCARF is made of classic silk chiffon sizing 104×120 cm. The British designer’s official site offers it for US $260.00. There are 14 choices of colors available.

The British fashion designer (late) Lee Alexander McQueen, CBE (17 March 1969 – 11 February 2010) was renowned for his unconventional designs and shock tactics. He worked as the head designer at Givenchy for five years before founding the Alexander McQueen and McQ labels. McQueen’s dramatic designs, worn by celebrities including Björk, Lady Gaga and Rihanna, met with critical acclaim and earned him the British Designer of the Year award four times.

KURT HUMMEL wore it when Mercedes and he confronted Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) about her relationship with Vocal Adrenaline’s lead singer Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff); otherwise they would expel her from the New Direction.

“It’s a turtleneck scarf by Michael Kors. I think we got it at Barney’s,” reveals Eyrich. “It’s such a delicious piece, but it wasn’t worn right. I wasn’t on set that day, so it was worn wrong. It was wrapped twice, but it’s supposed to wrap once and then the ends hang down in front.”

THE HISTORY OF SCARF

Tradition of wearing a scarf starts from the Romans. On those days, it was called “sudarium” and Roman men used it to wipe the neck and face from the sweat. The scarf was tied at the belt or knotted at the neck area.

Then, the wear of a scarf evolved into various corners of the world. Like in China, the soldiers of Dynasty Cheng (Shih Huang Ti) wore scarves made from wool to keep them warm in spite of cold air. In Croatia, the soldiers also wore scarves made from linen and cotton and silk; whereas silk scarf is associated to the workers.

For a very long time, scarf was linked to men’s fashion accessory. It was in 19th century that French women started adopting the fashion trend and make it increasingly growing. Nowadays, scarf has become part of the fashion industry. With a variety of fabrics and patterns, it can even be a focal point on one’s appearance.
