Before The Olympians, ROLEX Has Steal The Lightning!

Rolex Milgauss - Scientist Watch; Oyster Perpetual antimagnetic with Lightning Bolt

When I first saw this Black Rolex Milgauss DLC Watch, my mind promptly goes to the “Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief”, a fantasy-adventure film directed by Chris Columbus (2010). Well, it’s because the watch has an orange lightning bolt second hand which happens to be the signature feature of ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL MILGAUSS model.

Released in 1954 as the WATCH FOR SICENTIST, The Oyster Perpetual Milgauss can withstand 1,000 flux of magnetic field when working in power plants, medical facilities, and research labs where electromagnetic fields can cause havoc with the timing of a watch. This Rolex antimagnetic watch was set with paramagnetic alloy (Parachrom-Blue) hairspring and movement encased by a Faraday cage. Moreover, the ferromagnetic-alloy shield, screwed to the Oyster case, also makes a contribution to the Milgauss’ incredible resistance to magnetic interferences. Only Rolex certified watchmakers will ever see it, but the symbol for the magnetic flux density – the capital letter “B” with an arrow – is engraved in this magnetic shield.

Unlike the conventional ferromagnetic alloy which is vulnerable to magnetic field and shock, the Rolex paramagnetic alloy which has been researched for five years is unaffected by magnetic field and 10 times more resistant to shock.

As it incorporates double case back and “Faraday cage”, this Rolex Milgauss is quite a heavy watch (compare to other ROLEX WATCHES) weighing 157 grams; although it is said you will still feel comfort wearing it.

In French, “Mille” means one-thousand, and “Gauss” refers to German mathematician and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss whose name was immortalized as the unit of a magnetic field. That explains where the name “Milgauss” came. As its name suggest, this series of Rolex Oyster Perpetual Watch can work normally in a magnetic field of up to 1,000 Gauss. One Gauss is defined as one Maxwell per square centimeter (1 gauss ≡ 1 Mx/cm2 ≡ 0.1 Tesla).

To give you some illustrations, the magnitude of earth is 0.31-0.58 gauss; a small iron magnet has 100 gauss of magnetic field; the magnetic field strength of a sunspot is 1,500 gauss; and 2,000 gauss is the magnitude of a small neodyrium-iron-boron (NIB) magnet.

It seems to getting more like a sophisticated ‘rocket science’ to you now? :)

Well, although the watches were initially produced to fulfill the need of the European Organization for Nuclear Research “CERN” (Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire), it has been also developed into a fashionable casual watch. It is not only researcher and scientist on the labs wearing this timepiece, but also people on the street, at home and even at a party.

ROLEX said: “The Scientist Watch; The Oyster Perpetual Milgauss is the ultimate reference for those with the passion for the worlds of science and discovery.” Rolex addresses a niche market no more; The Company has broadened its target market. Notable person with Milgauss include international athletes such as the international golf sensation Adam Scott and the World Champion ski racer, Hermann Maier.

The ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL MILGAUSS WATCH is easily recognized by its three unique features that are:

  1. The orange lightning bolt seconds hand.
At the initial version of Milgauss in the late 1950’s, (ref 6541 and the limited edition ref 6543) the lightning-shaped hand came not in orange but non-colored. Even in the next version in the early 1960’s, the lightning bolt hand is disappeared. The change on this third version, Ref 1019 was quite significant as it came with a new movement (Cal. 1580) and different dial: black or silver or ‘CERN’ dial. After being discontinued in 1988, Milgauss has been produced nowadays sporting the trade-mark lightning bolt second hands in orange color.
  2. The green colored sapphire crystal.
Recent Milgauss series come in three models: steel 40 mm in black dial (ref. 116400), steel 40 mm in white dial (ref. 116400) and 40 mm steel with green sapphire crystal (ref. 116400GV – the letter “GV” stands for “Glace Verte”). Of course, the latter is the most famous model. The subtle green hue around the dial gives the Milgauss a unique aesthetic flourish as well as makes the watch recognizable at a glance.
  3. The orange indices and numbers at the dial.
The Milgauss GV features 3, 6 and 9 orange colored square markers and orange numbers at the end of every marker. The orange things illuminates in the dark which is said last about six hours.
What about the black or white dial Milgauss? They also feature orange markers and numbers but in different appearance.
